This audio
conference sponsored by UVA’s Office of Dean of Students/Student
Life will be held at Newcomb Hall from 1 to 2 p.m. Seating is

Speaker Hector Bauzá, owner of a Massachusetts marketing
company, will discuss how to appeal to the Hispanic community,
how to increase the Hispanic student population, and among other

2007: LATINO ISSUES IN VIRGINIA HIGHER EDUCATION PLANNING AND
NETWORK MEETING
Don't miss
this important gathering! All interested faculty and administrators
in the Commonwealth are invited to participate in an inaugural
event to establish a state-wide network of Latino and Latino Studies
scholars and college administrators. We will explore ways to improve
the quality of life for all Virginia residents and to reflect
the increasing diversity of the Commonwealth in the students,
faculty and staff of its institutions of higher education. The
event will be held at the Virginia Commonwealth University on
Friday, January 26, 2007 from 10:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Interest
groups formed on Friday will have an optional morning session

JANUARY
29, 2007: STRENGTHENING FAMILIES PROGRAM BEGINS
This free
program is scheduled on Mondays, from 5:30 – 8:00 pm, for
fifteen weeks beginning January 29 and ending in May 2007. It
is open to both parents of children from 6 to 11 years old and
their children and will be taught in Spanish and English at Cale
Elementary School. Dinner, child care and transportation will
be provided. Adult classes will include stress management; child
development; positive factors that influence children’s
behavior; communication skills; and setting limits, rules and
consequences. Children will learn how to resist peer pressure,
how to get in touch with their feelings and how to control anger,
and among other topics will learn about drug abuse. Families will
enjoy playing games and learn how to problem solve together. For
