UNTIL JUNE 1, 2008: PART-TIME POSITION SOUGHT: TRANSLATOR/INTERPRETER (ENGLISH-SPANISH)
Elizabeth Norfrey is seeking part-time employment as a translator/interpreter. She also has many years of experience working in churches and would like to assist with Christian ministries.
Elizabeth has a Bachelor's degree in Spanish and spent a year in Spain. She worked in international business in New York City prior to becoming a church musician and has worked as a freelance interpreter, Spanish teacher and tutor in the Providence, RI area prior to moving to Charlottesville in 2006.

UNTIL JUNE 1, 2008: KNOW A LATINO FAMILY WHO COULD USE AN ADVOCATE?
Amy Frazier Yoder will be teaching a UVA intermediate Spanish conversation class in 2008-09. She would like to organize her students in teams of two and pair up each team with a Spanish speaking family. Each team will maintain weekly contact with the family and will serve as an advocate on the family’s behalf. Each team will also produce a photo story of their family which will be organized into a public presentation to enhance knowledge about our local Latino community. JUNE 2 – SEPTEMBER 10, 2008: COURAGE AND CHANGE IN EL SALVADOR
Local photographer Peggy Harrison is exhibiting compelling images about the lives of Salvadoran women and their families at UVA’s Newcomb Hall Art Gallery from June 2 through September 10. An opening reception is scheduled for Thursday, June 5, 4:30 – 6:30 pm. An Open House Reunion is scheduled for Saturday, June 7, 1 to 3 pm.

JUNE 5, 2008: CJ COMMUNITY SERVICES WORKING GROUP MEETING
Participation in this working group is open to all individuals and agencies interested in enhancing social services to the Latino community. The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, June 5, 1 - 2:30 pm, at United Way (downtown). This meeting will include a discussion of training, confirmation of logistics for a future plenary, and looking ahead to setting dates for future activities. JUNE 12, 2008: CJ PLENARY – LATINOS & HOUSING ISSUES
Creciendo Juntos’ June Plenary will include a presentation on “Fair Housing: Know your Rights,” and “Credit IQ - What You Need to Know about Different Types of Lenders,” by Piedmont Housing Alliance, as well as a presentation on Landlord/Tenant issues by Legal Aid Justice Center.

JUNE 12, 2008: CJ/UNITED WAY WORKSHOP: LATINO PERSPECTIVES ON GOVERNMENT
CJ and United Way have teamed up to offer three cultural sensitivity workshops. Each will include one or more presentations and a discussion period. To facilitate a rich discussion, workshops will be limited to 15 people. Additional workshops will be scheduled for the fall.
Speakers at this second workshop Latinos Perspectives on Health will include the Colombian doctor Ivonne López, Rural Health Outreach Program, and Jerry Brooks, UVA International Clinic. The workshop will be offered on Thursday, May 15, 2008, from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m., at the United Way (downtown).

JUNE 13, 2008: WOMEN’S HEALTH: YOUNG WOMEN’S RISK TAKING, TIME FOR CONCERN
Women's Health Virginia will be hosting its 11th Annual Conference on Women's Health on Friday, June 13, Stepping Over the Lines--Young Women's Risk-Taking, Time for Concern. It will focus on behaviors in which girls and young women engage that pose significant health and wellness concerns, and ways in which health professionals, educators, parents, peers and others can help girls and young women develop healthier behavior and get help when needed. The day-long program will be at Alumni Hall in Charlottesville.
We believe the conference will be of interest to health and education professionals, parents, mentors, community organization leaders and others who are concerned about girls, teens and young women. Women's Health Virginia is applying for continuing education credits for physicians (AAFP), nurses, dietitians, social workers and CHES. We will provide certificates of attendance to other conferees who wish to use the program to meet continuing education requirements.
Speakers will discuss current knowledge about why young people engage in such behaviors, including current research on brain development; behaviors regarding sexuality and relationships; the quest for perfection in academics, athletics and appearance; violence, gang participation and other criminal acts; and substance use and abuse; and best practices for intervention; available resources and programs that address these concerns.
The luncheon keynote speaker will be Laura Sessions Stepp, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who specializes in covering teenagers and young adults for the Style section of The Washington Post and author of Unhooked: How Young Women Pursue Sex, Delay Love and Lose at Both and Our Last Best Shot: Guiding our Children Through Early Adolescence.

Position will promote awareness & understanding about the issues of domestic violence/sexual assault, and provide advocacy services to Hispanic/Latino victims/survivors. Position requires applicants be bilingual (English/Spanish), have a legal work permit, have valid driver’s license & access to reliable transportation, & have an interest in the criminal justice system. JUNE 21, 2008: IMMIGRANT SOLIDARITY NETWORK PLANNING MEETING
On Saturday, June 21 from 10 am - 2 pm, the Immigrant Solidarity Network will hold a planning meeting to set goals and make plans for the upcoming year, including the formation of a emergency response support system in case of a raid locally, and increasing community dialog around the immigration issue. JUNE 27 - 29, 2008: PEOPLE UNITED/PUEBLO UNIDO ANNUAL GATHERING
The People United will host its fifth annual gathering from June 27-29 at Shannon Farm in Nelson County. The People United seeks to gather people working for social change in various ways from around the state of Virginia. This year's gathering will include a focus on immigrants' rights and immigration reform. The weekend will include workshops on various issues as well as a chance to network. JUNE 23 – JULY 10, 2008: SIGN UP YOUR LATINA GIRLS FOR THE GIRL SCOUTS!
The Girl Scouts would like to expand its membership to include Latina girls. While all Latina girls are invited, Girl Scouts is especially interested in Latina girls in grades 2nd – 4th and is planning meetings for them from July 14 – 17, at the Church of the Incarnation, from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.
