NOW: LATINO BOY SCOUT TROOP BEGINNING: ENCOURAGE YOUR LATINO FAMILIES TO GET THEIR CHILDREN INVOLVED
BSA is working with a group of Latino parents to get Charlottesville's first Hispanic Cub Scout Pack formed at Incarnation Church. Jim Lansing, our Council VP of Membership, and his wife Karen hosted a very nice spaghetti dinner after mass a few Sundays ago, which allowed us to meet with several parents and boys.
We are now trying to get the word out about Scouting to all Latino families, and also build interest in this Pack. Nuevas Raíces did a very nice front page photo and inside story about Scouting, so we are hoping that will generate some interest as well. We are grateful to Incarnation for agreeing to be our Chartered Organization to this Pack, and for providing them space to meet each week.
We expect to have the pack up and running as soon as late-January or so.
Please contact me if you have any questions or know Latino families who would like to involve their children in Boy Scouts. Our receptionist is bilingual and, with my help, will be able to explain when we meet, the program, etc. Once our potential Cubmaster, Nancy Guzman, attends training, I'll provide her contact information.

NOW: SEEKING BILINGUAL VOLUNTEER FAMILY MEDIATORS – TRAINING PROVIDED
The nonprofit Mediation Center of Charlottesville (MCC) is looking to train as family mediators -- at no cost -- several people fluent in both English and Spanish. The intensive training, accomplished in four seminars over several months, covers basic mediation skills, Virginia judiciary, family mediation skills, and domestic violence screening. In order to be certified by the Virginia Supreme Court, participants must then observe two family mediations and co-mediate at least five family mediations, until their mentor mediators are satisfied that they are able to mediate alone, if need be.
We would like to recruit experienced adults who are interested in becoming mediators and who will commit to doing occasional volunteer mediations at the Center, as our Spanish-speaking clientele grows. Please note that because training and agreement-writing for the courts are in English, participants need to be fluent in both English and Spanish. URGENT: LATINO SOCCER TEAM NEEDS HELP
My name is Belen Martinez. I organized and am in charge of an indoor soccer league for the Latino community. The league started up well; we’ve played the first 4 of 14 games. Then I ran into a problem with the gyms. I've tried to find a gym to finish the season off, but so far I can't find a place that will rent to me. Even when I clearly state that we need a gym for the Latino community and I repeatedly get turned down. The League hasn't played in 4 weeks.
I would really appreciate it if someone could contact me with ideas. I can be reached at Belen Martinez, Charlottesville Club de Futbol, (434) 249-2966 or charlottesvillefc@gmail.com
NOW: GROUP OF BILINGUAL VOLUNTEERS SEEKING WORK
A small group of volunteers is looking for an opportunity to use their (mostly intermediate) Spanish skills and get involved in the Latino community. We encompass a wide range of ages, backgrounds, and speaking abilities, but we have in common the desire to practice Spanish and help out in a way that is truly useful in the Latino community. We’re looking for opportunities to get involved about once a month on a weekend day or evening. Particular areas of interest are: helping people find and connect to the resources they need, interpreting, and almost anything that would involve interaction with and support for the Latino population in Charlottesville. Our preference is to work together as volunteers while interacting directly with the community.
If you have an opportunity like this and could use volunteers, please contact Erin at erinhc@gmail.com

JANUARY 12, 2009: CJ HEALTH PROMOTER WORKING GROUP MEETING
Lay Health Promoters have a long history of providing public health services in many different cultures and countries, promoting health among groups which have traditionally been denied adequate health care, and working for a more equitable distribution of health services. The Promoters come from the community in which they work and are well trained and expected to perform health promotion, education and service delivery within a limited scope, networking with neighbors, churches and in other venues. They are not "doctors and nurses without a license" but may deliver primary care and preventive services within a limited scope of practice which they have been specially trained to do.
In May 2007, the CJ Health Promoter Working Group was formed with the objective of providing a Lay Health Promoter program in the greater Cville area. Since then the group has organized a Latino Health Survey, a large Help Fair in Southwood, a public panel addressing the Health Promoter model, and extensive training for twelve Latina Health Promoters. Among the activities planned for 2009 are monthly Continuing Education sessions for the twelve on the first Thursday of the month, coordinated by Colombian doctor Ivonne López (RHOP). The CJHPWG will be compiling data on the graduates’ activities to help with future grants. Most recently, it partnered with PVCC to apply for a large grant from the Dept. of Labor as a Work Force/ESL program through PVCC.
The group’s next meeting is Monday, January 12, 2009, at 9:00 am at SHE (by Albemarle High). Agencies and individuals interested in participating in the group are most welcomed. For more information contact Jan Wolfe (RN, MS, FNP, director of the Rural Health Outreach Program, RHOP): 434-263-4858, jan@rhop-brmc.org For more information about the group, visit http://www.cj-network.org/cjwgm/health.html
