JUNE 12, 2009: GROWING GIRLS STRONG CONFERENCE: STRATEGIES FOR BUILDING LIFE SKILLS & PREVENTING HIGH-RISK BEHAVIOR

CJ has a policy of not circulating announcements that are not specifically related to the Latino community or service providers working with them or that lack a Latino (or Spanish language) component. However, we are circulating an announcement about this annual conference because it is important for all education and health professionals, parents, mentors, community organization leaders and others who are concerned about girls, teens and young women.

On June 12, Women's Health Virginia will be hosting its annual conference Growing Girls Strong: Strategies for Building Life Skills & Preventing High-Risk Behavior at the Doubletree Hotel in Charlottesville. The program will examine factors that contribute to healthy female development, starting in early childhood, and programs that are effective in such positive development. It will inform participants about concepts and research as well as programs and practical experience that will help girls make better choices and have better lifelong outcomes.

The program is also a way for health and educational professionals to get continuing education credits. The program has been approved for 6.1 contact hours from the Virginia Nurses Association and we have applied for continuing education credits for physicians, social workers, certified health education specialists and dietitians. We will provide certificates of attendance for teachers, counselors and others who request them.

You can register by mail and pay by check or credit card, by phone (434-220-4500) or online with a credit card payment. For the form for mailed registration and online registration go to www.womenshealthvirginia.org

Call-in Information: Number: 1-888-742-8686; Code: 1335263#

Special guest presenter: Roger Morrell, Ph.D, is a Senior Staff Scientist with the Human Resources Research Organization (HumRRO). Dr. Morrell works in collaboration with many partners and projects of the Eliminating Mental Health Disparities Initiative (EMHD).

Dr. Morrell will share strategies about how TeleMental Health can be used to enhance outreach and improve service delivery for Latino children, youth and families for whom culturally and linguistically competent service providers may not be readily available or accessible. He will discuss how the use of technology and video conferencing can serve as an effective medium for developing, implementing and delivering mental health services.

He will also share information on other resources and projects of the Eliminating Mental Health Disparities (EMHD) project. This initiative "supports the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA) Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS) Transformation Agenda by reflecting the Center's values that mental health systems transformation must include strategies to reduce and eliminate disparities in care. Funded by CMHS, this undertaking serves as a vehicle to develop and implement strategies to eliminate disparities at the federal, state and local levels. The mission of the project is to ensure that services and supports are accessible, and culturally and linguistically competent to meet the mental health needs of culturally, racially and ethnically diverse populations. This effort is designed to address three critical areas: disparities associated with racial and ethnic groups, disparities created by geography (e.g., rural, remote and frontier communities), and disparities inherent to special populations (e.g., refugees, and LGBTQI2-S individuals)."
