CRECIENDO JUNTOS – GROWING TOGETHER
|
Volunteers
|
This section contains resources to locate or recruit volunteers. Prospective volunteers may also find them useful to identifying service providers seeking volunteers or to circulate blurbs about their interest to volunteer.
Creciendo Juntos (CJ)
The network’s website and weekly email bulletin are great ways to get the word out that you are either looking for bilingual volunteers or have bilingual skills and wish to volunteer. Contact cj.cville@gmail.com or visit www.cj-network.org
UVa Social Issues in Medicine Class
Dela Alexander coordinates this class of first or second semester medical students who are placed for 30 hours (over 10 weeks) of service learning with a community organization as part of the required class. Many of the students are bilingual and have worked in Latin America and/or with Latino populations in the US. These volunteers prefer to work in medical settings but can also devote time to related non-medical initiatives since the idea of the class is to expose future doctors to the poor and to different cultures. For more information on how to recruit these volunteers, contact Dela at da7r@virginia.edu
United Way
The United Way regularly recruits bilingual volunteers for the annual EITC tax preparations, the CJ Help Fairs, and other activities serving the Latino community. To explore bilingual volunteer activities, call 434/972-1703.
UVa Madison House
This agency operates almost 20 student-led volunteer programs, including the ESL Program and Migrant Aid. For more information on Madison House initiatives that serve the Latino community, visit its web site at http://scs.student.virginia.edu/~madison/ or contact Karver Bolton at karver@madisonhouse.org
