    • She will be looking into similar CJ networks in Boston.
    • The next meeting of the Working Group will be scheduled for August
  • Bernice Ramirez is the new CJ summer intern. She is bilingual/bicultural and excited about helping the working group (and its participating agencies/organizations) with their projects. She can be reached at bernice@virginia.edu
  • Jon Nafziger from United Way anticipates having a half-time bilingual staff member in July.
    • The position will go beyond basic referrals and provide more intensive guidance through assistance with applications and follow-ups.

  • Sunday (the day before Memorial Day) Aisha Rivera with the UVA Minority Health Group, will put on a day of free confidential testing. Food from El Puerto will be served.

  • The State Cancer Plan is in need of Latino representation. The volunteer must have a special interest in cancer and be able to attend quarterly meetings much like CJ’s. Please contact Nila Saliba for more information: 434-243-9217 or ns7e@virginia.edu

Agenda

  • Help Fair
    • It was decided not to schedule the fair in coordination with the visit from the Mexican Consulate because their date continues to be tentative.
    • The Health Fair is set for Sunday, October 21st at the Church of Incarnation from 2:30-5:00pm.
    • Agencies need to sign up for spots.
      • Interested vendors should contact Bernice Ramirez at Bernice@virginia.edu.
    • Last year’s list of vendors was a good mix. However, Jon suggested it might be good to prioritize if more vendors express interest in the fair.
    • Rhonda pointed out the need for an employment vendor last year.
      • Marie Murray suggested contacting Job Corps: she will be emailing a bilingual representative.
    • Nila pointed another gap in children’s dental care.
    • Vendor Cards were a good idea, are going to be distributed again at this fair.
    • Jon Nafziger suggested inviting the governor’s representative so that attendees can give the elected official feedback.
    • Bernice Ramirez offered to contact UVA students who could serve as translators and help with food pickup.
    • Rhonda addressed the issue of providing healthy food at the health fair.
      • Rice and beans, chips and salsa, and fruits/vegetables platters will replace fried foods previously offered at the fairs.
      • Drinks will consist of crystal light, coffee and lemonade.
  • Agency Staff & Training Event
    • The target audience is agencies serving Latinos.
    • The event will be a “Latino Culture 101” prepared by Marie Murray.
    • Tentative dates set for July 24th & September 13th at United Way, 3-4:30pm.
      • 15 person limit
      • Marie will email description of workshop to distribute on CJ alerts.
