SCHOLARSHIPS AND INTERNSHIPS 

​

  • Dream Summer: Dream Summer is a national internship program of the Dream Resource Center. The US Senate’s failure to pass the DREAM Act in 2010 sparked conversations among immigrant youth leaders on how to effectively sustain the immigrant youth movement, giving birth to Dream Summer, a national internship program.

​

COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY

  • University of Virginia's Latino Student Alliance serves as the representative voice of the Hispanic/Latino community inside and outside the University as well as to strengthen and empower this community to advance socially, politically, culturally, and academically.

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE, BASIC LITERACY, AND GED PREP FOR ADULTS

  • Thomas Jefferson Adult and Career Education: GED Prep and ESOL classes for adults in the Charlottesville region including Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, and Nelson counties. Costs vary. Scholarships available on a limited basis.

  • English Conversation Circle: A conversation circle to practice speaking English with others at the Northside Library. Free and open to everyone.

  • Directory of Mental Health Services for Spanish Speaking Consumers

​

​

  • The Charlottesville Free Clinic provides Adult Psychiatric Services for non-urgent mental health needs and individual therapy. They use an interpreter for Spanish-speaking clients. 

​

RESOURCES FOR PREGNANT WOMEN AND MOTHERS

​

  • Birth Matters Virginia: Birth Matters' mission is to "improve birth outcomes and lower social and economic costs through access to education, dissemination of evidence, and the sharing of personal narrative." Connect with Birth Matters Charlottesville Chapter here

​

  • Healthy Families at ReadyKids: Healthy Families is a home visiting program that support and empowers pregnant women and mothers with young children  by fostering positive parent-child interactions, which will prepare children to be school-ready. Through weekly visits, they provide developmental information and connect families to resources in community.

VIRGINIA WIC (Women, Infants and Children)

  • WIC helps women, infants, and children to be healthy by giving them healthy foods at
    no cost (milk, eggs, cheese, cereal, fruits and veggies, baby formula, and more).
    WIC also provides nutrition counseling and education, breastfeeding support and
    breast pumps, and referrals to other programs. Appointments available in Spanish. Undocumented individuals are welcome.

OTHER HEALTH RESOURCES

  • The Community Dental Center offers preventive and restorative dental services, including x-rays and cleanings. Medicaid/FAMIS typically covers all costs at the Center. Costs for children who do not have Medicaid/FAMIS are pay-as-you-go.  

​

  • Region Ten Community Services Board provides a range of services, including mental health, intellectual disability, and substance use services. They have multiple programs for children and families, including Strengthening Families, which provides support to families with children ages 3 to 11.

​

  • (SHE) Shelter for Help in Emergency works to support and empower victims of domestic violence through a combination of residential, community-based and outreach services. They have an Advocate for the Spanish-speaking community.

​

  • The mission of the Sexual Assault Resource Agency (SARA) is to eliminate sexual violence and its impact by providing education, advocacy, and support to men, women, and children. ​​

​

  • La Clínica Latina at The Charlottesville Free Clinic offers medical attention free of charge and in Spanish every 1st Tuesday and 3rd Thursday of the month. Please call at (434) 296-5525 to make an appointment and/or to receive financial medical assistance. Space is limited. 

​

  • The Family Check-Up (FCU) is a 3 session model that is scheduled directly with the family. The program is a strengths-based intervention that reduces children’s problem behaviors by improving parenting and family management practices. It promotes positive child outcomes such as decreased substance use and increased school attendance.

​

  • Foothills Child Advocacy Center provides Spanish workshops, focused on child sexual abuse prevention for adults who would like to learn how to better protect children from sexual abuse. Foothills also provides support and provides forensic interviews to victims of abuse at their center.

​

  • Addicted.org provides addiction services available in Virginia. Informative video about addiction, drugs commonly used in VA, with info and tips. Access to a helpline for information, at no cost.   • The International Rescue Committee: Low-cost, BIA accredited immigration legal services to all legal permanent residents, including citizenship, adjustment of status, family reunification, and other immigration services
